Preventative Care Matters
Symptoms of a Blown Head Gasket.
1. Engine Overheating
A blown head gasket allows oil to seep into the coolant system. This contamination disrupts the coolant's functionality, hampering its ability to effectively regulate engine temperature, ultimately leading to overheating.
2. White Smoke Emitting From the Tailpipe
Ideally, your car's tailpipe should emit no visible exhaust. However, a blown head gasket causes a mix of oil, fuel, and coolant in the combustion chamber, resulting in the release of white or gray smoke from the tailpipe.
3. Decreased Coolant Level
When the head gasket fails, the coolant must work harder to maintain engine temperature while also entering the combustion chamber. This often leads to a noticeable drop in the radiator's coolant level.
4. Contaminated Engine Oil
The engine oil in your vehicle should typically appear black or brown. With a blown head gasket, the oil becomes contaminated with coolant, altering its appearance to a milky or beige color.
5. Power Loss
A blown head gasket disrupts the smooth operation of your engine. As air and fuel escape from the combustion chamber, you may experience brief moments of power loss. Although the power may quickly return, it's essential to have your vehicle inspected by a professional.
